Tambov Drama Theatre has been one of the oldest theatres in Russia. It was founded in 1786 by an outstanding poet of the 18th century Gavriil Derzhavin.

Since 2007, Tambovtheatre has been holding the annual theatre Festival named after N.Rybakov. Today the Festival is a unique phenomenon in the Russian theatre life of Russia.

For Georgy Dmitriev, director of the performance, the word “island” means a symbol of enclosed space – a cage. That is why there is such extraordinary scenery, that helps the director to show his view on the story of the Cripple Billy. If McDonagh endued Billy with physical mutilations, then in the performance of the Tambovtheatre Billy is physically healthy but he is a cripple in the eyes of the others because his mind and views of life differ. He tries to break away from the “cage” but suffers a defeat.

“The Cripple of Inishmaan” is a bright, comic interpretation of McDonagh`s play about the small Irish island. It is a sad story that makes you laugh. Intricate costumes, music illustration and dynamic dance turn the production into the fascinating mini-musical. The audience is given an     opportunity to enjoy the engrossing ironically tragic plot and to feel visually musical atmosphere of the performance.
