A performance based on Dostoyevsky’s novel “Crime and Punishment” is the début work of Attila Vidnyansky, art director of the Hungarian National Theatre, one of the most renowned directors of modern Eastern Europe, on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater. The director found it most difficult to abridge Dostoyevsky’s original text, creating a performance, which lasts five and a half hours.

A lot of the characters are made younger than in the novel, almost all have to commit a crime of their own. Dostoyevsky’s boys are plunged into the depths of despair either by severe poverty, either by the desperate need to sell their personal freedom.

Only from the abyss may Raskolnikov encounter the simple truths of the New Testament.

Starring: Alexander Palamishev (Rodion Raskolnikov), Dmitriy Lysenkov (Porfiry Petrovich), Sergey Parshin (Marmeladov)
