“Masquerade” for the Alexandrinsky Theatre is like Chekhov’s “Seagull” for the Arts Theatre. The last production Meyerhold had created in this theatre, it only premiered twice in February of 1917. Then a great number of historical events occurred, the performance returned to the stage, it had a second version, and after – a third one, but at that took place in the 1930-s

So this play is an emblem of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, what else must be noted, is that it demonstrated several different theatre traditions woven together.

Academy, fine arts, decorations, sounding – music and intonation. That is why the choice fell upon it to mark the two anniversaries – Lermontov’s and Meyerhold’s. Certainly, this production should not be considered a full reconstruction. Three scenes are reconstructed by sketches and graphics, by musical sheets, which are in the theatre’s collection. Surrounding it we have contemporary form, this is where the action takes place.

We tried to make this a genuine reconstruction using the drawings by A. Golovin. I assume it is 80 – 85% close to the original.
