Liliom is a play about desire and longing that go beyond modest life conditions and are nonetheless conducive to the fulfilment of individual dreams. Liliom is a hero beyond mediocrity who resolutely follows his own dreams, regardless of the consequences. It is his genuine desire to lead an exhilarating, fulfilling and decent life with his girlfriend Julie in spite of miserable circumstances.
